• The geese looked in • Gifts of 'warmth' • Off to Israel • CPSA gets first woman PEO
The geese looked in A Fathers' Day service on the Village Green and a gaggle of geese swam up and checked what was going on.
Having listened to what Sharon Nell the rector of Zwartkops River Valley Parish was saying, they swam off again, leaving the crowd attending the service next to the river feeling they’d had an extra blessing.
Being
a winter morning it was cold, but this did not deter a crowd from
attending the service. One ‘young man’ of about five was
delightful in his responses to Sharon as she asked questions. Her
sermon was on the loaves and fishes, and everyone enjoyed munching on
homemade fishy biscuits while listening to Sharon speak. Unfortunately
there were not 12 baskets full of leftovers to share with the hungry
over the hill ... maybe next time we’ll have enough faith! The
men received an extra blessing when, at the end of the service they
were spoilt with ‘droë wors’.
Afterwards delicious eats were enjoyed by all.

Gifts of 'warmth' During
May a concerned member of St Katharine’s in Uitenhage approached
the fellowship group saying how cold the patients at the local SANTA
hospital were, reports Patty Matthews.
She said there are
about 114 TB patients in the hospital, and that their feet,
particularly, were very cold. The women immediately rallied around, and
in no time at all enough bed socks and beanies were provided for all
114 patients, including 10 children.
When the group took these
to the hospital, they were shocked to see the condition of the blankets
on the beds. They were paper-thin, and some beds had no blanket at all.
They also saw that some patients were in need of warm pyjamas and
jerseys. On hearing this report, the rector and churchwardens decided
to purchase 100 grey blankets for the hospital. They also made an
appeal to the congregation for donations towards the project. What a
wonderful response was received! Our generous parishioners provided
enough to buy more than half the blankets.
During
June, a group of the men and women from the parish filled cars with 115
blankets, warm pyjamas, track suits, jerseys (from our Jersey Sunday),
books and magazines, toys, oranges and apples - and more than that, our
love and concern for these poor patients, and off we went to SANTA. We
were welcomed by nursing staff, patients and social workers. The goods
were off-loaded among much laughter and happiness, and were gratefully
received.
Our next project for SANTA - tackies for all.

Off to Israel The
editor and her husband have been blessed by someone covering their
fares on the Pilgrimage to Israel being led by Rykie Steyn and Roy
Snyman tssf. We leave on 13 September and return eight days later.
Ken
and I are praising God for his wonderful love ... and that of his
people who have made this possible. A cheque in the post ... a phone
call asking if I had a valid passport and would I like to join the
group.
I have prayed Psalm 122 for a long time and had a heart
for Israel and the Old Testament for many years, now I will see
Jerusalem at last and visit some of the places I've longed to see.
Please rejoice with us and pray for the group, about 54 of us, that we
will be blessed by the experience and draw closer to our Lord as we
travel to the places where he lived and ministered at. Please also pray
for our safety. I know the Lord is our shield and defender so I am sure
he will be protecting us during our travels.
Early deadline Please note that this will mean I have to have all articles for the October iindaba by the last day of August. As
there will be many members of our diocese on the pilgrimage, I'm
warning all the readers that they will be getting short reports from
many of the pilgrims when we return - and lots of photos too.
CPSA gets first woman PEO Media release from Cape Town - The
Archbishop of Cape Town, Njongonkulu Ndungane has announced the
appointment of the new Provincial Executive Officer (PE0) for the CPSA.
This is the most senior administrative position in the church after that of the Archbishop himself.
For
the first time in CPSA history, the appointee is a woman and is also
not a South African. She is the Very Reverend Nangula Kathindi, a
Namibian, currently Dean of St George’s Cathedral in Windhoek.
This
is the second time within a year that Dean Kathindi has made history.
In October 2005 she became the first woman dean ever to be installed in
the CPSA, which includes six countries and the Island of St Helena.
As
Provincial Executive Officer, Dean Kathindi will act, among other
things, as secretary of the Provincial Synod - the highest legislative
body of the CPSA. She will also act as secretary to the Synod of
Bishops.
Archbishop Ndungane, who held the position of PEO under
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, says that Kathindi is a highly
competent person with large experience in administrative
matters. She was General Secretary of the Namibian Council of Churches
from 1999 until 2005.
“In addition to her administrative
ability, she is a deeply spiritual person and the appointment of a
woman into this position is a recognition of the diversity within our
church in the Southern African region,” said the Archbishop.
Kathindi
is married to an architect and has two teenage children. She will take
up her new position from January 1, 2007.She says: “I am humbled
and thrilled to be able serve my church as PEO. I know by God’s
grace I’ll be able to deliver.
