USPG mission friend
The Blue Crane Hospice is honoured to have Winifred Alford tssf, a Mission Friend from USPG in England. She arrived at the end of August and will be here for six months. She is a trained counsellor and is presently driving our Staff Nurse, George Lessing, to his patients in the three towns of Cookhouse, Somerset East and Pearston. As an experienced counsellor, Winifred is helping in that vital ministry to all those living with a life threatening illness.

Winifred told iindaba she was happy to be here but is shocked at the squalid poverty she has seen in the townships and at the extent of the AIDS pandemic. “God certainly is in control of hospice ‘matters’, for at a time when we are without a second professional nurse and trained administrator he sent us Winifred,” said Jean. “She is not only vital to the smooth running of the hospice at this time as none of the present staff can drive, but she also has a good understanding of palliative care.”

Winifred’s late husband, Dr George Edelstyn, was an oncologist in Ireland and worked closely with Dame Cicely Saunders.

EPHA
Blue Crane Hospice has recently been accepted as a member of the Eastern Province Hospice Association. Please continue to keep the Hospice in your prayers for much needed financial blessings.

Xhosa Classes in Kabega
[ Howard Lancaster ]

Over the last few months, a group of parishioners at All Saints´ Church, Kabega Park have been hard at work learning conversational Xhosa. The `titshala´ has been Fikile Magxaki of St Stephen´s, New Brighton. Twenty lessons later, we have learned some vocabulary, although more seems to be in our notes than in our heads! Insights into Xhosa culture and customs have enthralled us, but mostly, it has been an interesting and encouraging time of learning some basic Xhosa dialogue.

We now know, amongst a range of eventualities, how to invite one another to coffee, to ask who preached last Sunday and to inquire after someone´s health, although as far as the answer is concerned, we trust that they are well, as we have not learned many medical terms!

The course came to an end with a social to which Xhosa-speaking members of the congregation were invited to discover how much (or maybe how little) we had learned! The consensus was that the lessons would need to continue informally Sunday by Sunday and whenever members of the congregation meet. Our Xhosa members have promised to keep us on our toes.

All in all, it has been a thoroughly worthwhile and enjoyable experience with much laughter. Enkosi kakhulu, Fiks!

A new beginning
[ Siyabulela Tshatshu ]

The youth of Kariega Archdeaconry, under the leadership of the archdeacon, Zweli Tom, held a conference at Holy Spirit church from 26 - 28 September. The purpose was to build fellowship among the youth of the archdeaconry; discuss challenges facing the youth of the diocese and encourage maximum participation of the youth from the parishes; to develop a comprehensive programme to deal with the growth, development and challenges young people face and to map out a programme of action for the future.

Youth from seven out of the 12 parishes in the archdeaconry attended and were addressed by speakers such as Greg Moses, the Canon co-ordinator of diocesan guilds, Wezo Bloko, former chairman of the Diocesan Youth Council, Sipambo Ludidi, rector of St Simon of Cyrene and diocesan HIV/AIDs coordinator, and various clergy from the archdeaconry.

Various resolutions were taken among which were that the movement would have one uniform; to have a brand new name; to influence other archdeaconries to do what we are doing and to build positive relations with neighbouring parishes that are not within the archdeaconry; to continue to invite neighbouring parishes from the archdeaconry who have not responded this time; the executive to serve for a two year period; organise programmes on a monthly basis; youth must be active within their own parishes at all cost and to accept everyone who is young at heart, no age limit for the youth.

A corporate address that reflected the current status of the Kariega Archdeaconry Youth Department was given by the chair, Zukisa Jeyi.

Falling angels and much more

Falling angels, backward angels and angels with heads on their wings were all part of the fun as about 50 women met at St Saviour’s to learn how to make Christmas decorations. It was no bad reflection on the facilitators, Christine Sheehan and Claire Phelps, that the learners seemed to be all thumbs and produced some strange looking decorations. Some of us are not too artistic ... but we had fun! Then there were those, being most of the group, who produced beautiful decorations and will no doubt have wonderfully decorated Christmas trees and tables this year.

Ah, to be so gifted!

Three for the price of one
[ Claire Phelps ]

It's not every day that a parish has a chance to celebrate three big '0' birthdays on the same day, but St Saviour's celebrated the birthdays of Eddie Daniels (50), Don Elsdon (60) and Sheila Saunders (70) on on the evening of Wednesday 15 October - they share the same birthday.

The evening began with a Eucharist service, after which everyone enjoyed snacks and refreshments in the hall. It was a wonderful time of celebration with so many parishioners attending. During the course of the evening "PE's Paparazzi" (Joshua Daniels, accompanied by Wayne Hill and friends) arrived on their Harley Davidsons to deliver a gift for Eddie. After much unwrapping and many layers of newspapers, the envelope was revealed. And the gift...a voucher for a pie and coke, Eddie's all time weakness!  The evening was such a wonderful time of celebration, Eddie's already counting down to his next birthday! iindaba wishes all three many more years of health and happiness.

New banner for HTC

Hazel Braun reports that Holy Trinity in Central has a brand new banner, made by our dedicated banner team of ladies. The banner has to be seen to be appreciated. It is very meaningful – especially to HTC – ‘the church for all nations’.

World-wide Anglican news

The Anglican Church is going through many challenges at present such as: The Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) being held in the Holy Land and being attended by many bishops who are boycotting the Lambeth Conference; The Archbishop of Canterbury saying, the adoption of certain aspects of Sharia law in the UK "seems unavoidable", and much more.
