Celebrating triple gold
Holy Trinity Parish is
celebrating triple gold this year with our 150th anniversary of the
founding of the church, reports Daphne ffolliott.
The purpose of commemorating our founding will be to repent of past
sins, heal and reconcile relationships, celebrate 150 years of
God’s blessings and to lay new foundations for the future. The
‘Jubilee 150’ vision is to organise one event or concept
for each month in 2007; to celebrate some of these with our parish
family only, others with all Anglicans in the diocese, others with all
the Christian churches, and still others with the City of Port
Elizabeth; to complete the transformation of the sanctuary, chancel and south
transept by Trinity Sunday in June when Bishop Bethlehem will bless
them on that day; to inspire Holy Trinity family members to reach out
continually to one another and others, and to do all this to the glory
of God.
Some of the events to look forward to include a bus tour from St
Mary’s Cathedral to HTC, stopping and praying at each of the
original sites of HTC’s migration; a crafter’s market on
Havelock square; an ecumenical procession on Palm Sunday and an
ordination of deacons service on Trinity Sunday.
Various souvenirs will be on sale, and there will be a display in the church of its 150 years of history.

Shabbat in the Karoo
Members from cell groups in the
Schoombie area of the Parish of the Karoo gathered on 22 November for a
Shabbat meal to learn more about the roots of their faith.
Realising the Jewishness of Jesus, and that the only way to really get
to know him personally is to understand his background and culture, was
part of the reason why members of the cell groups, together with some
friends, joined for the meal. "Waterlea", the home of Robert and Jean
Lord, was crowded with 32 people enjoying the meal and fellowship. It
was a combined effort with some having cooked or baked, arranged the
flowers, and others set the tables.
Shabbat, the Sabbath, is the day of rest set
aside by God for families to be together, share a meal and to relax. This was part of the teaching which Frankie Simpson, the PE
representative for Prayer Union for Israel, shared with the gathering.
Bob to visit PE
Bob Clarke, the Field worker for PUI will be visiting Port Elizabeth
from 24 May to 4 June. As it is Pentecost, parishes can take advantage
of this opportunity to have a Shavuot meal with the wealth of teaching
which includes bringing in the tithes, or perhaps a Passover meal as
Easter will not be that far gone - these being only two of the great
variety of teaching on our Jewish roots. Contact Frankie on 041 360
6808 during evenings to arrange a visit by Bob to your parish or cell
group.

Remembering them
Remembrance Sunday at St
Paul’s in Parsons Hill - bringing to mind those who gave up their
lives for their country in the great conflicts of the last century,
reports, Bob Green.
Sadly, the numbers of those left to remember their fallen comrades are
dwindling fast, so it is fitting that we should use this solemn
occasion to honour also those who have died more recently protecting
our land and people. At the invitation of Ruthell Johnson, rector of St
Paul’s, this year’s Remembrance Day service was attended by
some of the staff of the South African Police Service based at Mount
Road police station, headed by Director Meyer and Snr Supt Albers.
Following the calling of the roll of those colleagues who have died in
the performance of their duty, SAPS Chaplain, Vusi David delivered his
address, using Romans 13 saying that the police are servants of God -
for there is no authority except that which God has established.
Vusi exhorted us to support and encourage the police as they carry out
their daily duties and to keep both the policemen and their families
constantly in our prayers as they put their lives at risk for God and
community.
The Erica School Band, led by Veronica Venter, provided a rousing
accompaniment to the hymn singing while two young trumpeters from the
band gave a stirring rendition of the ‘Last Post’ and
‘Reveille’.
This year’s service has added a new aspect to Remembrance Day. We
would hope to continue in the future to commemorate this solemn
occasion in such a meaningful way.
New lay ministers

new lay ministers were licensed by Christopher Holmes on St
Nicholas’ Patronal Day, 3 December. They are Nancy Goddard and
Geoff Booth who join Ann Booth, Martin Shepherd, Thandi Stokwe and John
Jeffries, increasing the squad at ZRV to six.

Schoombie school project
Pic: One
of the projects undertaken by the Schoombie members of the Parish of
the Karoo is the small primary school, which they have spent time
painting and beautifying with curtains and flooring. Kelly Southey, the
art teacher, made the curtains and helped with the painting. She is
seen in the picture with a few of her pupils.
Farm workers gather for worship
Pic: Many
of the farmers living around Middelburg in the Parish of the Karoo
continue to be concerned about the spiritual well-being of their
workers, and contribute towards a stipend for Pastor Barry Thomas, of
Helping Hands Ministry, to minister to them.
Barry covers three farming areas where he ministers in the schools and
takes services for the workers on Sundays and during the week. He and
his wife, Elizabeth, live in Middelburg and Barry travels to the farms
a couple of days a week.
