Christmas came early for some
Christmas came early for the senior citizens of Holy Spirit Church in KwaZakhele reports our Holy Spirit correspondent.

The senior citizens were invited to a meal and given grocery parcels on Sunday 26 November. After the morning Eucharist the grannies and grandpas went into the hall where Mrs Sizani ‘shook the hall with African Jazz music’.  Mrs Skosana from the Dept of Social Development spoke about the social issues of the old people, and warned them not to spoil their grandchildren with the grant they receive from the Government. After they had enjoyed their meal the grannies and grandpas left with food parcels and a Christmas present each.

The parcels and gifts had been donated by Pick ’n Pay in Newton Park, local business people and doctors, St John’s in Walmer and All Saints’ in Kabega Park.

Essential services thanked

Pic: Members of All Saints’ Church visited their local police station in Kabega Park, and the fire and ambulance station in Greenbushes, on Christmas Day to take them parcels of Christmas cheer, in appreciation of their work over the festive season. Veronica Kaibe, one of the churchwardens, hands a parcel to the firemen on duty.

Little lambs stole the show

Pic: Cute little lambs - The five little lambs at the House of Resurrection Haven carol service stole the show and looked so cute as they did their bit.

Ecumenism at Advent
Diana Thompson, of our link diocese of Namibia, writes:

“Each year on the first Sunday in Advent we have the Festival of Seven Lessons and Carols at 19h00 in our little Cathedral of St George the Martyr, Windhoek. On the fourth Sunday of Advent we have the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, also at 19h00 - although this year we shall be holding this service on the third Sunday in Advent. For the Seven Lessons and Carols we have an augmented choir with members of our own very small choir, folk from the GermanLutheran Church and some from the Christian Community Church - not too bad for ecumenical relations!”

Archbishop of York speaks out
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, attacked those who are trying to purge Christianity from public life in the UK and said such people were undermining the country’s cultural traditions.

This follows reports of schools leaving Jesus out of nativity plays, and businesses banning Christmas decorations. He said, “The person who is at the heart of the celebration is totally excluded. This really is a case of throwing out the baby with the bath water, or in this case throwing out the crib at Christmas.” He also claimed “aggressive secularists” were unfairly blaming other faiths to advance their own anti-religious agenda.

A survey conducted in Britain claimed that three out of four employers had banned Christmas decorations for fear of offending other faiths. The study found that 74 per cent of managers were not allowing any decorations in their offices this year. Bosses also felt that Christmas trees and tinsel made offices unprofessional, said law firm Peninsula.
