Looking back
The South End Museum is full of nostalgia, with photographs of the people and buildings that were part of that wonderfully integrated community before they were separated into groups according to the colour of their skin.

One sees many familiar faces among the photos of the people who once worshipped at St Peter's or who were involved in the many community projects in those days before removal.

iindaba was invited to a media afternoon arranged by two young interns, Kim Price and Lydia Koekemoer. A presentation was given by the Administrator, Colin Abrahams, and details were given of guided tours that can be booked as well as the hiring of the facilities.

Parish organisations are encouraged to visit the museum and when booking their tour they can arrange for tea to be provided as well. The hall, seating 150 people, may also be hired, and for those who enjoy walking there is a Heritage Trail of the buildings, ruins and sites that have survived the devastation of the Group Areas Act.

Special events will take place on 18 May - International Museum Day; 29 May - South End Museum Memorial Lecture; and 30 June - 4 July an Educational Holiday Programme will take place. Contact Beverley Pieterse for any details or bookings: 041582 3325.

A very caring community
Michael Tucker of Zwartkops River Valley Parish was full of praise for the parish family and for Greenacres Hospital staff when speaking of the care given to his wife, Anne (+70), after she fell on 6 December.

She is a diabetic, having four injections a day, and had a broken femur and two lateral cracks, and also had to have a prosthesis replaced. Michael said the surgeon was brilliant and Anne is mending well with all the love and pampering from the community. He added, "Husband is surviving and has not developed culinary skills yet!"

Thabo installed as Archbishop of Cape Town
[ Mninawe Jokani ]

Bp Bethlehem has written about the ceremony in Cape Town but this report from cpsa.chat is so joyful we are printing it too. The service was absolutely stunning although it was quite long - over three hours. It was so colourful and full of joy. When Thabo Makgoba entered the Cathedral, according to the programme the audience was asked to remain quiet, but we couldn't resist, and as he came in the Cathedral was filled with joy - we were clapping, shouting, yiyizela ... you name it!

The service itself was so solemn, uplifting and beautiful.

It was good to see President Thabo Mbeki, his wife Zanele, the Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Science and Technology Minister Mosibudi Mangena, the Premier, Ministers and top businessmen present. It shows the relationship The Anglican Church of Southern Africa (TACSA) has with the government, perhaps because we pray for them during our Eucharist services.

The Anglican Communion was well represented with Primates from other Provinces as far as America and former Archbishops of Cape Town. The Archbishop of York was there on behalf of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The service was held on Sunday 30 March and was attended by over 1 000 people. At 47 Thabo Makgoba is the youngest person to be elected as Archbishop of Cape Town. Former Archbishop of Cape Town Desmond Tutu said it was not enough for people to just say Makgoba was "young". "He is not only young, he is also handsome," he said.

Wall hangings exchanged
[ Hazel Braun ]

Last year Bisi Fadeyi-Adetuberu encouraged some of the women from the Usindiso group she heads up at Holy Trinity in Central to make a very attractive wall hanging which she sent to St Paul's, Erith in Kent, UK. Recently they reciprocated and
Brenda Reid brought out a beautiful wall hanging which enjoys a permanent home in the Healing of the Nations Chapel at HTC

Bisi is a missionary who was sent out to Port Elizabeth by her home church, St Paul's.

2008 - The Year of the Organ
[ Maureen de Villiers ]

Just as this year is "The Year of the Rat" in China and Taiwan, so the Royal School of Church Music has declared 2008 the "The Year of the Organ"! To honour this mighty instrument, RSCM has organised special events world-wide.

As its contribution to these celebrations, RSCM-SA has invited a highly acclaimed UK organist and choir director to visit the main centres in South Africa. His name is Gordon Stewart and, apart from his musical talents, he is also well known for his dynamic Christian witness. He will be in Port Elizabeth on Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 June. Actually, we are "sharing" him with SAKOV (Suid Afrikaanse Kerkorreliste Vereeniging), with whom RSCM (EC) has formed a strong link.

On the Monday evening, Gordon will give an organ recital at the Summerstrand Dutch Reformed Church.
The following morning, he will hold an organ master class at St Mary's Cathedral. All interested people are most welcome to attend as observers, whether they play the organ or not. For those who are organists, it is an invaluable opportunity, merely by observing, to pick up many useful tips.

On Tuesday evening, Gordon will be conducting a "Festival of Hymns" at the Cathedral. He will also give a short organ recital. There will be a practice beforehand for choir members and for any other folk who are interested in being part of the choir. We are hoping to include instruments in some of the items.

Final details will be sent to all affiliated churches as well as the local newspapers. We sincerely hope that Port Elizabeth's contribution will feature prominently in these world-wide celebrations of the king of instruments. This will only be possible if we have the full support of all our affilliated choirs and congregations.

World-wide Anglican news

The Anglican Church is going through many challenges at present such as: The Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) being held in the Holy Land and being attended by many bishops who are boycotting the Lambeth Conference; The Archbishop of Canterbury saying, the adoption of certain aspects of Sharia law in the UK "seems unavoidable", and much more.
