Of immeasurable worth
Speaking to the gathering of 30 clergy and their secretaries celebrating Secretaries Day Bishop Bethlehem said that he does not know how to measure the ‘worthiness’ of the parish secretaries. He mentioned the long hours for little pay, the many things they have to remember for their bosses, the sacrifices they make in walking the ‘extra mile’ on many occasions which is all done for the love of their Master, God.

Once again Faith Geere had gone the extra mile (and more) to arrange the lunch and see to the table decorations and the little gifts for the secretaries. After grace had been said Christopher Holmes proposed the toast to the secretaries before everyone enjoyed the delicious Chinese meal supplied by Derek and Marlene of St Francis Xavier.

Dennis Burkinshaw, diocesan secretary emeritus, gave a lively description of the many organisations and fields he’d worked in where, as soon as it was realised he could write well, he was seconded to secretarial work.

Unfortunately clergy and their secretaries from four parishes had to be turned away as they had not let Faith know they were coming and there was not space at the tables, nor were they catered for.

Singing in a choir can be cool!
The recent visit to PE of Leah Perona-Wright, co-director of the Voice for Life programme in the UK, brought a whole new dimension to the recruiting and training of choir members of school-going age. Voice for Life  exists to support and promote singing in churches, schools and other organisatons.

About 65 folk, including church and school choir leaders, attended a most enjoyable and informative Voice for Life  workshop at Collegiate High School, which was conducted by Leah. Choir members from Collegiate High, Papenkuils Primary and EduCollege were used in the practical side of the workshop. There were, in fact, many more representatives from schools than from churches. Leah’s enthusiasm rubbed off onto all present and she soon had them singing some of the delightful songs that appear in the new RSCM Voice for Life Songbook. This book has been compiled with young people and singers at beginner and intermediate levels in mind. The photo-copiable volume contains 40 songs in a range of styles, including traditional church music, gospel and jazz, and songs from around the world.

The RSCM Voice for Life Choir Trainer’s Book contains plenty of material about setting up and running a children’s choir. It includes issues such as rehearsal technique, recruiting, choir pay, discipline, child protection, weekly standards, roles for your singers within the choir, copyright issues etc. It is also packed with help, advice and teaching material on vocal and music training (eg theory, sight- singing and aural). Graded workbooks are also available.

For more information about the Voice for Life training scheme and songbooks, go to: www.rscm.com and follow the Voice for Life links.

AIDS healing and remembrance service
A wonderful programme was put together for the ‘AIDS Service of Remembrance, Healing and Hope’ held at St Mark’s in Humansdorp on Saturday 8 September.

After a time of praise then confession, for the church’s attitude towards people living with AIDS (PLA’s), “Khosi”, a young matric student, gave her testimony to the caring by members of Holy Trinity in Port Elizabeth when her mother died of an AIDS related disease and shortly afterwards her father was killed in a car crash. A very significant time followed when the rector, Ronnie Allwright lit the AIDS memorial candle and people were invited to light candles in memory of loved ones. Beautiful liturgical dancing by young people and a solo rendition of ‘Brother let me be your servant’, wonderful singing by Eric Dyer accompanied by his father, Doug, and short talks by Eileen Bambrough and Pam Brown helped to keep one ‘wanting more’. A long queue formed of those wishing for prayer and anointing with oil for healing. Most of the people returned to their seats looking joyful or at peace having had a touch from the Lord.

The service was part of an assignment for the TEE course on the Church’s Response to AIDS which Eileen and Pam are doing. Eileen spoke of the pandemic and the Christian’s response of caring and praying for PLA’s and the researchers seeking a cure for the virus. Pam spoke of the need for the very important 1Cor 13 kind of love that is needed when reaching out to PLA’s  and also the practical love in giving baby packs and knitted blankets to AIDS orphans, running soup kitchens and much more.

TEE College 2008
2008 will see a range of new short Special Focus Courses offered by TEE College and especially geared for equipping people for various areas of parish ministry.

These short courses consist of various combinations of four subjects from the new Level 4 Certificate of Competence in Theology. They are Preach your Faith, Care for People, Know your Bible, Spirituality - the broader picture, Live your Faith, and Know your Christian Context.  Students interested in taking courses in a particular area may now do so and receive a certificate of completion once they have completed these specific components, instead of doing all 11 required courses to complete the Certificate of Competence in Theology.

Registration is about to open for 2008. An information Meeting is scheduled for 16h00 on Saturday 3 November 2007 at All Saints´ Church, Kabega Park. Prospective students are invited to attend to find out about the various options available to them through TEE College. These include the Award Course (which includes several subjects - even Preaching in isiXhosa), the Level 4 Certificate of Competence in Theology, the Level 6 Diploma in Theology and Ministry and the Level 7 Bachelor of Theology.
