AIDS ministry extended Eileen Bambrough reports on the on-going HIV/AIDS ministry in the Parish of the Good Shepherd, Humansdorp area.
Recently
a group of parishioners from St Francis Chapelry, Jeffreys Bay,
together with assistant priest, Jackie Trollip, extended the support
this congregation had previously established in HIV/AIDS ministry.
For
many years, soup made by parishioners has been distributed to seriously
ill patients by the sisters of St Francis Hospice. Now, working with a
home-based care worker from the municipal clinic, five families who
have people living with HIV/AIDS are being visited as well. Each week
they receive nourishing food such as e-pap, soup and maas for the
patient, as well as other basic items for the rest of the family
– Pronutro, bread, peanut butter, and fresh fruit and vegetables.
Prayers are said with each family, and a short time of
fellowship enjoyed. The visits have been truly blessed, and the
visitors have met with much warmth from the patients, their relatives
and, in some instances, neighbours who are helping with the caring.
Parishioners have contributed generously in the way of finance,
foodstuffs, bedding and other items to make the patients’ lives
more comfortable. So all members of the congregation are playing a part
in this outreach of compassion, taking God’s love to those in
need.

Quilters reach out to Lithemba Two
members of the Zwartkops River Valley Parish’s Lithemba Crafts
Group attended Outreach Workshops held during the National Quilting
Festival in July, reports Lyn Bosch.
Sisters Nokuzola and
Zoliswe Mabuya, or Noki and Zoli, as they are known, benefitted greatly
from the workshop. Each produced beautifully quilted patchwork
articles, Noki a handbag and Zoli a wall hanging.
They are now
in the position to share the skills they learnt with the whole group,
including the teachers. Another benefit was the donation to the group
of a sewing machine by Bernina. Glynn Smith of the Dias Quilters'
Guild presented the machine to the ladies on behalf of Bernina.
 The
Dias Quilters' Guild, Bernina, Craftwise and Da Gama combined forces
and resources enabling 40 delegates from previously disadvantaged
communities to attend empowering workshops. All costs such
as transport, festival entry and two meals were covered, and all
equipment and materials were supplied.
This injection of skills
and equipment enables Lithemba to continue with its mission of
equipping and skilling members of nearby communities with various
sewing techniques. This empowers them to generate much needed
income, thereby helping alleviate poverty.Lithemba is greatly indebted
to the Quilters' Guild and all the sponsors of the Outreach Workshops.

What a line-up President George Bush,
Condoleezza Rice, Mother Superior and her nuns, Dolly Parton and a
group of Bums from Broadway all graced the Zwartkops River Valley
Parish with their presence on the night of 21 July.
The occasion
was a Fish ‘n Chip Supper and Concert, and members of the parish,
together with many friends, turned out in force to join the fun. Among
the guests was Zweli Tom, the Archdeacon of Zwartkops River, with his
wife and family, and members from St Hugh’s and St
Saviour’s parishes.
George Bush and Condoleezza Rice had
great difficulty communicating, the Bums from Broadway had everyone
holding their breath wondering how far they were going to strip, the
parish treasurer went through the parish finances and Sharon, the
ancient one, sang of her favourite things. When the Happy Hoekers
arrived the rector, Sharon Nell, was relieved to find they were the
‘Amsterdam-hoekers’ and not the other kind. However,
everyone held onto their wallets when the Redhouse F’Ship began
‘Picking a Pocket or Two’ and listened with awe as June
told of the ‘Shape I’m in’.
Although the
weather was bitterly cold, the fun, fish and fellowship soon had
everyone warm and happy, and looking forward to next year’s
concert.

Dolly Parton, aka Desré Foaden, sang some of her popular songs.
Fun run for Haven The
cold, rain and wind did not deter people from enjoying the 5 Km fun run
All Saints' in Kabega Park had organised in aid of the House of
Resurrection Haven.
It was the first time All Saints' had
arranged a fun run so they were not too sure how succesful it would be.
However, at the time of going to press they had already collected R1
600 for the Haven, whose staff looked after the water point along the
route.
Miss Port Elizabeth, Chuma Myoli, had braved the weather
and was there to welcome the runners and to hand out the prizes. By the
time the first runner arrived, the sun had begun to shine, but prize
giving was held in the hall. Both winners (man and woman) each received
R500 Spar shopping vouchers. Other prizes included more Spar vouchers,
Woolworths and Spur vouchers, travel bags and T-shirts.

AWF celebrate at Kinkelbos This
year the Anglican Women’s Fellowship held their annual Mary and
Martha Day Thanksgiving service at St Peter’s in Kinkelbos,
reports Hazel Braun.
Over 100 members travelled the +70 kms to
St Peter’s to give thanks to the Lord and enjoy a day in the
country. The AWF chaplain, Sharon Nell, conducted the Thanksgiving
service. She spoke on ‘be ye doers’ and commented on how
many ways the members do assist their parishes. Some are Marys and
others are Marthas, but the most important thing is to have a personal
relationship with Jesus so that one can tell others about him. Their
thanksgiving offerings were given to the House of Resurrection Haven.
After
a delicious bring ‘n share lunch, the annual Mjikelo took place.
With much dancing and foot stamping the money was brought in and these
donations are to be used towards the cost of the Provincial Conference
being held at Dower College from 19 September to 1 October
Seeking your memories Holy Trinity Parish in Central is looking forward to celebrating its 150th anniversary next year.
As
part of the celebrations Daphne ffolliott is gathering photos and
‘memories’ from as many former parishioners, and people
associated with the church in any way, as possible. iindaba is sure
there are many people around who can help.
If you have any
stories or photos you are willing to share please contact Daphne at:

Women, be smart - be safe The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do! If
a robber asks for your handbag, do not hand it to him. Toss it away
from you ... he is probably more interested in your handbag than you,
so he will go for the handbag. Then run like mad in the other
direction!
