Local launch of Growing the Church
[ Sharon Amery
]
The weekend of the 19th - 21st September will find Bishop Bethlehem,
along with local clergy Andrew Watt, Thokoza Mngomezulu and Fumanekile
Kula, together with Shan Fox, Glenis Jacobs and Xhantilomzi Mhlontlo
attending the Provincial launch of 'Growing the Church' in Johannesburg.
This group has been hard at work putting together the diocesan event
that will follow the following week. Events to look forward to in the
inaugural Growing the Church week in our diocese include a clergy
school, a day for the lay leaders of each parish as well as evenings of
teaching and worship at various parishes.
Helping to make this happen is an American SOMA (Sharing of Ministries
Abroad) team, lead by Revd Paul Hensley, a leader in mission. Together
with Rose - Marie Edwards Tasker, an intercessor’s trainer and Maleea
Morelock, a youth worker; the team will be teaching on biblical
principles regarding evangelism, intercession and becoming an inviting
community.
Attitude - the power within us

The theme for the annual fundraising banquet held at St Augustine’s in
Gqebera on Saturday evening 31 May was “Attitude.” The house was full
and there was a law enforcement presence on the premises as the guest
speaker was the Eastern Cape MEC for Art and Culture, Mrs Abraham
Ntantiso. She said, “Attitude is the power within you” and continued to
elaborate on the theme saying that the spoken word is very powerful and
once something is said it cannot be undone. She also said that two other
things that one can never regain are: lost time and missed opportunity.
Mrs Abraham-Ntantiso stressed the importance of loving oneself
unconditionally, forgiving oneself, accepting the past and having a
positive and optimistic attitude. She said, “Happiness comes from within
– you have to bring happiness to a situation,” and continued by
reminding her listeners that they are God’s creation, fearfully and
wonderfully made, children of God. Quoting Gal 5:1a, “Yimani ngoko
enkululekweni, athe uKrestu wasikhululela kuyo,” she reminded them they
are created to be free – free to choose, so they must not blame others
for the choices they make. She addressed the young people telling them
to put peer pressure aside and make their own decisions, and to make a
stand for God.
Mrs Abraham-Ntantiso finished her speech by telling everyone that they
must know that they are the best thing that has ever happened to
themselves! Needless to say, she got a standing ovation.

On Sunday 27 April Bishop Bethlehem and Mazoe paid the Parish of Sundays
River Valley their annual visit. As always a wonderful message was
delivered. Representatives from our chapelries joined us in worship with
the most beautiful singing. We enjoyed a time of upliftment. Pic: The rector,
Zweli Tom with Bishop Bethlehem Pic: Mike McCoy on his trumpet On Monday 28 April Mike McCoy, one of the assistant priests from St

Fun time at St Mark’s [ Pam Brown ] Sunday School Teacher, Karen du Preez ran a very successful holiday club

were thrilled to see all the posters the children had made and to listen
to the event retold during our service on Sunday 20 July. Pic: Some of the children who enjoyed the holiday club run at St Mark’s in
